Kweilin Dreaming (1989) by Pat Steir

“Kweilin Dreaming,” created by Pat Steir in 1989, belongs to the Post-Painterly Abstraction movement. The artwork exhibits an array of abstract forms and gestures against a predominantly off-white backdrop. In the upper portion, the composition features blue and indigo shapes, creating an impression of random marks or possibly clouds. To the right, more blue impressions and a circular form suggest the form of a celestial body. The center of the artwork contains vibrant additions, including orange and yellow hues that conjure the image of a descending or rising sun. There are also formations somewhat resembling text, where “China” and “moon” can be identified. The lower region includes a series of blue dots organized systematically along with a yellow, dotted structure, adding to the abstract nature of the piece. The interplay of color, form, and text in “Kweilin Dreaming” evokes a sense of both ambiguity and contemplative space.
