Triptych of Last Judgement (c.1482) by Hieronymus Bosch

The artwork, titled “Triptych of Last Judgment”, was created by Hieronymus Bosch around the year 1482. This religious painting, forming part of the Northern Renaissance art movement, is executed in grisaille on a panel and measures 167 x 60 cm. It is currently housed at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria.

The artwork displays a solemn figure in the forefront, adorned in what appears to be period-appropriate garb and holding a bird. Surrounding this central figure are smaller, detailed depictions of various other characters engaged in different activities, suggestive of narrative elements typical of Bosch’s works. The grayscale technique used, known as grisaille, exemplifies the artist’s adeptness at shading and invoking depth without utilizing a full color palette. The serene, yet contemplative expression of the central figure contrasts with the animated demeanor of the others depicted, contributing to the overall solemn atmosphere typical of representations of Judgment themes.
